How to Choose the Right Boston Accelerator

Choosing the right accelerator depends on your stage, sector, and goals. Here's how to think about the Boston accelerator landscape:

If You're Building at Pre-Seed

For founders at the earliest stages who are already building a product and preparing to raise capital, TNT is the strongest option in Boston. TNT provides the highest infrastructure value of any Boston accelerator ($300K+ in cloud credits), dedicated mentors who are experienced founders and investors, and direct introductions to VCs. TNT is the only program that brings MIT and Harvard founders together in one cohort during the academic semester.

If You're Focused on Deep Tech or Climate

The Engine is the leading program for tough tech companies translating breakthrough science from lab to market. Greentown Labs is the go-to incubator for cleantech startups, offering lab space and prototyping facilities. MassRobotics supports robotics and automation ventures with shared workspace and industry connections.

If You Want a Large Network

Techstars Boston has historically connected founders to a global network of 10,000+ mentors and alumni in exchange for equity, though it is not running a Boston cohort in 2026. MassChallenge runs one of the largest accelerator programs in the world with broad sector coverage and competition-based prizes.

If You're a Student

MIT students can access MIT delta v (summer accelerator), MIT Sandbox (grants up to $25K), the MIT $100K Competition, and MITdesignX. Harvard students can apply to Harvard Innovation Labs, Harvard Life Lab (for biotech), and the President's Innovation Challenge. TNT is the only accelerator available to students from both MIT and Harvard in the same program.

Key Insight: Many founders participate in multiple programs. A common path is to start with a university program (MIT Sandbox or Harvard i-Lab), then join TNT for dedicated mentorship, infrastructure credits, and VC introductions as you prepare to raise.
